Do Animals Have Souls?

BY HDG B.S. TIRTHA MAHARAJ

According to Vedic literature, there are four major functions common to humans, animals and birds. They are: eating, sleeping, fearing and mating. If humans performing these functions can be considered to possess spirit soul then what is preventing us to have same consideration as animals also perform these actions? Anything moving or growing must possess the spirit soul. In the Bhagavad Gita, the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna informs us that one who has attained proper spiritual realisation does not distinguish between a human and an animal. He develops a loving vision of equality because he sees the same spirit soul, each one being a part of the Supreme Lord, seated in the body of a human being as well as that of an animal.
